In Ethiopia, Bahir Dar University is the only educational institution offering Textile Engineering, Garment Engineering and Fashion Design at degree level. The Institute has a history of more than 40 years. Earlier the program was only at the advanced diploma level particularly when the department was under former Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute which was established in 1963 in collaboration with Russian Government.

The Institute of Technology for Textile, Garment and Fashion Design (iOTEX) is proud to be one of the Institutes of Technology in Ethiopia. But iOTEX also is different: it is the only institute in the country focused only on all facets of textiles and garment. This status is a distinction, but it also means taking responsibility.

 

iOTEX and iOT inauguration

News

Two technology institutes namely the Institute of Technology for Textile, Garment and Fashion Design (iOTEX) and the Institute of Technology (IOT) were officially inaugurated on October 15, 2010 at the technology campus of Bahir Dar University. The official inauguration was preceded by marvelous instrumental music played by the Regional Police Marching Band. Then, Dr, Yeshimebrat Mersha, President of Bahir Dar University, officially opened the inauguration ceremony with an opening and welcoming speech.

Research and Consultancy

Being  the only academic institutions of its kind in the country, the Institute possesses a great deal of expertise in such areas such as textile technology, textile chemistry, apparel technology, textile management, quality management, marketing and merchandising. The management of the Institute believes that the integration of complementary areas of expertise facilitates the further development of its research competencies, and considers the formation of research groups to be an important mechanism for such integration.

 

 

National projects

Currently, iOTEX has signed MoU with the Privatization and Public Enterprises Supervising Agency (PPESA) to undertake the following activities in four government-owned textile factories:

  • to conduct detailed problem/constraint assessment in the factories mainly pertaining to training gaps
  • to offer training to the different levels of employees in the factory
  • to conduct the impact assessment in the factories
